Sabotage stalling NIPP projects in South-East – Okorogu

The realisation of stable public power supply may remain a mirage if the current level of sabotage being experienced across the country is not immediately checked.

Executive Director (Networks) of Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited, Dr. Albert Okorogu, disclosed this, yesterday, in Owerri, Imo State, on why the nation is yet to achieve stable power supply.
“At Oronta community in Umuahia South Local Government Area, saboteurs vandalized a standing high tension steel tower. Another set of armed hoodlums stormed our contractor’s base at Umuahia, Abia State, tied the security men and removed 10 drums aluminum conductors used for high voltage tension wires, in broad day light,” Okorogu lamented.
Fielding questions, he said that while sand excavators were doing serious damage to the high tension lines in parts of Imo State, a different scenario was playing out in Nenwe, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.
“We had acquired the line because we were asked to avoid the living areas in Nenwe. It took four years to achieve this but midway into the process, people not only started dwarf walls along the high tension line, but also took us to court. It stalled the project.”
Confirming the destruction of the steel tower at Oronta, the Secretary of Oronta Development Union, Mr. Okoro Michael, described it as “economic sabotage.”
“Our Community is not happy about the felling of the steel tower. It is an economic sabotage. We are not in support of this. We have reported this to the police,” Okoro said.
